About South ForkThe town of South Fork is named for its proximity to the south fork of the Rio Grande. Since its beginnings as a stagecoach stop in the 1880s, timber processing, agriculture, mining and ranching as well as tourism and recreation have contributed to the town's economy.
South Fork serves as the southern gateway to the Silver Thread Scenic Byway on US 149 as it winds its way 117 miles westward through the San Juan Mountains to Blue Mesa Reservoir. Interpretive signs along the highway give details about the region's history, geology and wildlife.
The area's many lakes and 47 Rio Grande tributaries allow for plentiful fishing and river rafting opportunities. Other recreational activities include hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, hunting and skiing.
