About Southwest Harbor Located on the southwest side of Somes Sound and bordered by a natural fjord, this fishing and boatbuilding center shares Mount Desert Island with Acadia National Park. With about 70 lobster fishermen operating from its wharves, Southwest Harbor is the archetype of the New England coastal village.

Bass Harbor Head Light, 3 miles south on SR 102A, is a favorite spot for photographers. Local conditions are ideal for boating, swimming and other water sports. Schooner cruises, deep-sea fishing excursions and canoe rentals are available.
