About SurpriseIn the Sonoran desert, Surprise was founded in 1937 by Homer C. Ludden, a state legislator who named the town after his hometown in Nebraska. Surprise Stadium is the spring training center for the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers. Eight miles southwest is White Tank Mountain Regional Park, which offers 22 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Ancestral Desert People petroglyphs and such wildlife as the cactus wren, the official state bird, may be seen.
