Trivia about The Grand StrandSpanish explorers sailing north from Hispaniola in the 1520s are the first “tourists” to visit what would much later be known as The Grand Strand.

In 1995 Legends in Concert , a celebrity impersonator show known for its spot-on tributes to famous entertainers, comes to Myrtle Beach.

The iconic Myrtle Beach Pavilion amusement park closes in 2006.

The groundbreaking for Myrtle Beach’s 1.2-mile oceanfront boardwalk takes place in 2010.

Fun Fact: A string of beach clubs along North Myrtle Beach’s Ocean Drive form the unofficial headquarters of the shag, South Carolina’s state dance.

Fun Fact: In the summer of 1973 future country music superstars Alabama played for tips as the house band at a downtown Myrtle Beach nightspot.

Fun Fact: A time capsule buried at Nance Plaza, on the southwest corner of Kings Highway (US 17) and 9th Avenue N., is scheduled to be opened on Dec. 18, 2054.

Fun Fact: “Wheel of Fortune” hostess Vanna White was born in nearby Conway.

Fun Fact: More than 1 million LED lights are utilized during SkyWheel Myrtle Beach ’s nightly light show.
