More About
Tybee Island, GA

About Tybee IslandTo visitors who flock to the island’s 3 miles of sandy shoreline, Tybee means beach resort, but originally the name came from a Native American word for salt. The island’s strategic location at the mouth of the Savannah River resulted in the construction of a lighthouse in the 1770s and a defensive fortification in the 1880s.

The laid-back community off the coast of Savannah offers a slightly slower pace than its more famous vacation neighbor, but the hospitality is the same. Several retail areas line US 80 as you drive into town. Shops like Gallery by the Sea, Seaside Sisters and Fish Art Gallerie are just three of many places that offer beach-themed gifts, handmade goods and unique art.
