About UvaldeKnown as Encina 1855-56 and renamed in honor of Spanish Army general Juan de Ugalde, Uvalde once was the domain of notorious frontier sheriff and outlaw, J. King Fisher. A more respectable resident was John Nance Garner, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's first- and second-term vice president. After serving two terms in office, Garner returned to Uvalde, where he died at age 98.
