About VermillionVermillion, founded in 1859, stands on the Vermillion River's red clay banks, after which both the town and river were named. Clay County Park, 3 miles west, offers picnicking, camping and boating along the Missouri River. After a disastrous flood swept away three-quarters of the town in 1881, it was rebuilt on the bluffs overlooking the river.
The Austin-Whittemore House Museum, a fine example of Italian-villa style architecture, contains Victorian displays and settings reflecting early town history. Visitors may tour the house year-round; phone (605) 624-8266.
