About West YellowstoneAs its name suggests, West Yellowstone is at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Due to this strategic location, the town's major industry is tourism. Numerous outfitters and rental operations supply visitors with various sports equipment, particularly snowmobiles and cross-country skis, for use in the park and in bordering national forest areas. Fly fishing, hiking and horseback riding can be enjoyed during summer.
Two miles north of West Yellowstone on US 287, the Interagency Aerial Fire Control Center provides tours explaining firefighting techniques in summer, when staff is available; phone (406) 646-7691.
For evening entertainment The Playmill Theatre at 29 Madison Ave. presents 2-hour musical comedy performances Monday through Saturday nights, mid-May through early September. Saturday matinées also are offered. Reservations are recommended. For more information and schedules contact the theater; phone (406) 646-7757.
