About Woods HoleOn the southwest tip of Cape Cod, Woods Hole is a census-designated place in the town of Falmouth. A center for oceanographic research, the village is home to such organizations as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the largest independent oceanographic research institution in the U.S., and the Woods Hole Research Center, which addresses environmental issues.

Only limited on-street metered parking is available. A seasonal trolley service, the “WHOOSH,” operates between Falmouth and Woods Hole. A guided walking tour of the town is given Tues. at 3:30, July-Aug.; it originates at Woods Hole Historical Museum & Collection. The Steamship Authority, a car and passenger ferry providing service from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard, operates mid-April to mid-November; phone (508) 477-8600 for information or reservations.

NightlifeWoods Hole may be tiny, but it does have a few places to wet your whistle. Waiting for transportation to the Vineyard? Kick back with a frosty beverage at Quicks Hole Tavern , next to the ferry terminal at 29 Railroad Ave. A string of windows wrapping around the second-floor dining area provides excellent views of Great Harbor. Phone (508) 495-0048.

The Captain Kidd (77 Water St.) was built in the mid-1800s overlooking Eel Pond, a marina sheltering sailboats, fishing vessels and a number of charming houseboats. No pirates here—OK, besides the ones depicted in the vintage mural facing the tavern's ornate mahogany bar. Crowding the dimly lit watering hole instead are Marine Biological Laboratories interns taking a break from their biological, biomedical and ecological research to knock back a coupla pints of Murphy's; phone (508) 548-8563.
