Yarnell sprang up as a gold-mining town after a prospector named Harrison Yarnell struck gold on a nearby mountain peak in 1863. Some active mines still produce silver, gold and copper; however, the area's primary industries are cattle raising and tourism. Many vacationers visit Yarnell in the summer to escape the desert heat and to enjoy the many recreational pursuits the area offers.
