The Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St., houses one of the foremost collections of American art from the 18th century to the present. The museum is recognized among the oldest art organizations in the U.S. and includes more than 10,000 works in its permanent collection. The region’s rich cultural heritage is depicted through paintings, sculpture, engravings, photographs, miniature portraits and other art objects. Artists represented throughout the museum include Jonathan Green, Childe Hassam, Alfred Hutty, Henrietta Johnston, Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, Thomas Sully, Anna Heyward Taylor and Benjamin West.

The Gibbes hosts annual special exhibitions that connect Charleston to the wider world of artists and museums. The museum also regularly presents lectures, events and classes.
