Maroon Bells is 9 mi. s.w. off SR 82. The jagged peaks of the Maroon Bells are some of the country’s most photographed mountains. Many souvenir snapshots feature their reflection in the waters of Maroon Lake. The loftiest of the peaks towers at 14,156 feet. Hiking trails, picnicking and fishing are available in front of the mountain at the lake. Aspen Center for Environmental Studies offers free naturalist-led guided walks along Maroon Lake and up to Crater Lake from early June through Labor Day.

Note: From mid-June through Sept. 30, access to Maroon Creek Road is open daily 8-5 only to private vehicles carrying those staying at the campgrounds, those with children in car seats or those with physically impaired passengers. Round-trip shuttle service from the Aspen Highlands ski area is available. The road reopens to all traffic 5 p.m.-8 a.m.

Guided tours are available.
