AAA Editor Notes
Ponderosa State Park is 1.5 mi. n.e. at 1920 N. Davis Ave. Embracing most of a 1,000-acre peninsula on the shores of Payette Lake, the park is named for its old-growth forest of ponderosa pines, some upwards of 150 feet tall. More than 12 miles of trails lead hikers and mountain bikers through the diverse landscape, which ranges from dense woods and sagebrush flats to marsh and lakeside cliffs.

Osprey Cliff, accessible by road and trail, offers stunning views 300 feet above the lake. Along Payette Lake's western bank, the Warren Wagon Road leads to the 500-acre North Beach Unit. A sandy beach and popular canoeing route along 4 miles of the North Fork Payette River is also part of the park, about eight miles north of McCall.

On Saturdays in summer, junior ranger and evening programs are offered. Winter activities include snowshoeing on 3 miles of trails and Nordic skiing on more than 12 miles of groomed trails. Cabins are open year-round.

Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
