Second Bank of the United States Portrait Gallery is at 420 Chestnut St. within Independence National Historical Park. The 1824 structure, modeled after the Parthenon, now houses the People of Independence 1750-1840 collection. Nearly 200 late 18th- and early 19th-century sculptures and portraits, many by Charles Willson Peale, illustrate Philadelphia's role as the capital city 1790-1800. Many of the works represent members of the military and signers of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Works by artists James Sharples and Thomas Sully also are included.

Closed for major renovatons; scheduled to reopen in spring 2023.
