Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge occupies the southwestern two-thirds of Kodiak Island and 50,000 acres on Ban Island and the northwestern tip of Afognak Island. The 1,865,000 acres were set aside to preserve the habitat of the Kodiak bear, some of which weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Among other inhabitants are Sitka black-tailed deer, sea lions, sea otters and bald eagles. The refuge is accessible only by plane and boat. Cabins and a number of recreational activities are available.

Recreational activities are permitted.
