AAA Editor Notes
Alabama State Capitol, on Capitol (Goat) Hill at 600 Dexter Ave., is a Greek Revival-style structure with a 119-foot white dome. The 1851 building served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the first 3 months of the Civil War. Twin three-story spiral stairways and murals depicting Alabama history adorn the interior; a Confederate monument is on the north lawn. The Confederate Constitution was drafted in the Senate chamber.

A bronze star on the west portico marks the spot where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office. In March 1965, the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, led by Martin Luther King Jr., ended on the street in front of the Capitol.
