Moundville Archaeological Park, 634 Mound State Pkwy., preserves the ceremonial center of Moundville Indian culture. Remnants of this 300-acre city, dating from A.D. 1100, consist of 28 mounds once used as platforms for lodges and temples. Steps lead to the summit of the largest, which stands 60 feet high. The Jones Archaeological Museum's impressive artifact collection as well as multimedia, special effects and re-created scenes are used to illustrate ancient Moundville culture. Models of aboriginal dwellings and earthworks also are presented.

Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
