AAA Editor Notes
Apache Trail (SR 88) starts at Apache Junction and proceeds for 39 mi., climbing past the famed Superstition Mountains, passing through Fish Creek Canyon and skirting the southern edges of Apache, Saguaro, Canyon and Roosevelt lakes, ending at Globe. The trail was created in 1905 to transport supplies from Phoenix and Globe to the construction site of Roosevelt Dam. The road parallels the ancient route of the Apaches through the canyons of the Salt River.

Note: The 25-mile portion of Apache Trail between Tortilla Flat and Roosevelt is a narrow, winding gravel road. It is not recommended during rainy weather, for inexperienced drivers or for vehicles more than 35 feet. West-to-east travel from Apache Junction to Globe will put you on the inside lane and grant all passengers the security of rock walls rather than the steep cliffs on the other side.
