Lighthouse Park is off Marine Dr. (watch for the park sign at the turnoff), then a short distance s. via Beacon Ln. to the parking area. Capt. George Vancouver sailed past the rocky peninsula at the entrance to Burrard Inlet in 1792 and named the site Point Atkinson. Today this lush remnant of old growth coastal rainforest encompassing 75 hectares (185 acres) is a peaceful haven and wonderful place to hike. The lofty first-growth Douglas firs and other conifers are up to 500 years old.

Several kilometres of trails crisscross the park; to get to the Point Atkinson Lighthouse take the Beacon Lane Trail south from the parking area. It's about a 15-minute walk to a viewpoint with an expansive vista (on clear days) of the lighthouse (a working one and therefore closed to the public), the inlet and downtown Vancouver on the opposite shore. From the lighthouse viewpoint, short East Beach Trail leads down to the rugged, rocky beach along Starboat Cove.

The group of buildings near the lighthouse were barracks during World War II, when a number of B.C. light stations were used for surveillance purposes.

Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
