University of California Berkeley is e. of Oxford St. between Hearst St. and Bancroft Way. More than 42,000 students attend the university, which not only occupies a beautiful 1,232-acre campus but is often in the vanguard of any nationwide campus movement, whether it be political, artistic or philosophic.

South Hall, built in 1873, is California's oldest university building. Regarded as one of the nation's leading public universities, Berkeley is known for its quality undergraduate and graduate programs.

Zellerbach Hall, just north of Bancroft Way near the Cesar Chavez Student Center, is the home venue for Cal Performances, a major performing arts presenter. A variety of events—from chamber, orchestral music and jazz concerts to recitals, dance performances and theatrical presentations—take place during the September-through-May season. The University of California Golden Bears football team takes to the gridiron at California Memorial Stadium, and the university's men's and women's basketball teams play at Haas Pavilion.
