Mount Wilson Observatory is 14 mi. n.e. on SR 2 (Angeles Crest Hwy.), then 5 mi. s.e. on Red Box Rd. to the observatory gate. The historic observatory, located in the San Gabriel Mountains at an altitude of 5,715 feet, played a starring role in the development of astronomy beginning in 1904. It is the home of the 100-inch Hooker telescope, which along with several others can be viewed during guided tours. A museum houses displays of spectacular photos of the sun, planets, comets, nebulas and distant galaxies. A self-guiding tour brochure is available, but only the museum is accessible without a tour guide.
