Mission San Fernando Rey de España, midway between I-5 and I-405 at 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd., was founded Sept. 8, 1797. Restored structures include the church, monastery, majordomo's house, workrooms and living quarters around the quadrangle. The old gardens, now Brand Park, have flowers and shrubs from the other 20 missions. A carillon rings hourly 9-5.

An Archival Center preserves and interprets historic documents and records of California's Catholic heritage. A Native American crafts room is featured. A museum theater offers three presentations illustrating the history of the missions, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the life of Father Junípero Serra. Comedian Bob Hope is buried on the grounds.
