Museum of the Western Cultures María Ahumada de Gómez

AAA Editor Notes
Museum of the Western Cultures María Ahumada de Gómez (Museo de las Culturas de Occidente María Ahumada de Gómez) is part of the Casa de la Cultura complex at Calzada Pedro Galván and Av. Ejército Nacional. It has a superb collection of pre-Columbian pottery and artifacts. Male and female statues depict many aspects of daily life in pre-Hispanic western Mexico. Noteworthy are the Izcuintli, or “Colima dog” figurines, playful representations of dancing canines. Deposited in the tombs of the departed, they were said to guide the dead in the journey toward tlalocan (paradise). Exhibit information is in Spanish.

The museum's cafe has a smoky ambience accentuated by Salvador Dalí posters hanging on the walls.
