The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is on the w. bank of the Norwalk River at 10 N. Water St. The 5-acre, restored 19th-century foundry features a complex of interactive exhibits about the marine life inhabiting Long Island Sound.

Highlights include an aquarium with more than 1,000 marine animals native to Long Island Sound. One touch tank includes crabs, starfish and other inter-tidal animals, while another features sharks and stingrays. Other attractions include an IMAX theater, a 3,000-gallon coral reef exhibit, the Frogs! exhibit and aquariums featuring sharks, sea turtles, river otters, jellyfish and large fish. Visitors also can view seal shows and a special exhibit featuring meerkats. Kiosks allow visitors to digitally color a marine animal and see it portrayed on a video wall.

Boat cruises offering encounters with animals on Long Island Sound depart from the aquarium's dock. Educational programs and guest lectures also are offered.

Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum.
