U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum, Home of USS Nautilus, is off I-95 exit 86, then n. on SR 12 to just outside the Naval Submarine Base, 1 Crystal Lake Rd. The world's first nuclear-powered submarine was commissioned in 1954. Four years later, the Nautilus completed the first undersea voyage to the North Pole. Models, films and equipment at the museum trace the history and development of the U.S. Submarine Force. Submarines from the Revolutionary War to the present include World War II midget submarines. A highlight is the model of Capt. Nemo's Nautilus from Jules Verne's “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”

On self-guiding tours of the Nautilus, visitors receive an audio wand that describes each compartment. Select areas of the submarine, including its torpedo room, officer staterooms, dining areas and control room, may be explored. Occasional submarine test voyages departing from the adjacent Naval Submarine Base along the Thames River may be seen from the Nautilus as well as other on-site areas.

Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
