National Library of Medicine is at 8600 Rockville Pike; visitors must stop at the Gateway Center to present identification, undergo a vehicle inspection and obtain a pass. Originally established in 1836 as the Library of the Army Surgeon General's Office, the library is a source of biomedical information for health professionals and the public. One-hour guided tours begin in the visitor center, which is located in the lobby of the Lister Hill Center Building 38A, and include the computer and reading rooms, exhibition area and the History of Medicine Division. Tour participants also get to view “Expanding the Medical Universe,” a 12-minute high-definition television (HDTV) presentation providing an overview of NLM programs and services.

Note: Visitors ages 16+ must show a government-issued photo ID; ages 0-15 must be accompanied by an adult. Parking is limited. Visitors should allow as much as 30-45 minutes to obtain the Gateway Center pass.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
