Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens is at 4155 Linnean Ave. N.W. This 1926 Georgian-style mansion, former home of Post cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, displays comprehensive collections of 18th- and 19th-century imperial Russian art as well as 18th-century French decorative arts.

The Russian porcelain room features china services and glassware commissioned by Catherine the Great. The Icon Room boasts rare icons, gold and silver chalices and an array of jeweled pieces by Carl Fabergé. The French drawing room contains tapestries and 18th-century French furniture. A one-room dacha, or Russian summer house, displays changing exhibits. Gardens on the 25-acre estate include a cutting garden, a French parterre, a Japanese-style garden and a rose garden. Special exhibitions also are presented throughout the year.

Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum.
