Lincoln Park is on E. Capitol St. between 11th and 13th sts. N.E. Part of Pierre L'Enfant's original 1791 plan, this is the largest of Capitol Hill's four primary parks and is popular for picnicking or just relaxing. At the west end stand two historically important public artworks. The Emancipation Statue, depicting Abraham Lincoln liberating an enslaved person, was created by Thomas Ball and dedicated in 1876 with Frederick Douglass and President Ulysses S. Grant in attendance.
The Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial commemorates the educator and activist and shows Mrs. Bethune handing a copy of her legacy to two young children. It was the first public monument in the District of Columbia to honor a Black woman and was paid for by donations from the National Council of Negro Women, the organization Mrs. Bethune founded in 1935.
Picnicking is permitted.
