Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site is at 1318 Vermont Ave. N.W. This Victorian town house was the former home of Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial School for Negro Girls in 1904; it later became Bethune-Cookman College and then Bethune-Cookman University. In 1935 she was appointed a special adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The visitor center has exhibits and an audio presentation of Bethune's last speech.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
