AAA Editor Notes
Diego Rivera Mural Museum (Museo Mural Diego Rivera) is at calles Balderas and Colón, just w. of Alameda Park (M: Hidalgo, lines 2 and 3). It was built specifically to house the epic mural “Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central,” which had originally been painted on a wall of the Hotel del Prado across the street. Although the hotel was torn down following damage caused by the 1985 earthquake, the mural weathered the disaster and was carefully moved. The central figures—among a gallery of Mexican historical characters—enjoying a Sunday promenade in the park are the artist (portrayed as a child); his wife, fellow painter Frida Kahlo; and Catrina, a clothed skeleton (calavera) representing the works of satirist José Guadalupe Posada.

Publications and lithographs on the walls provide information about the historical characters. The second floor has information about Rivera's life and work and also is used for temporary art exhibits.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
