AAA Inspector Notes
Historic. Originally the palace of royalty, this café is tremendously popular with tourists. It features hand-carved stone columns and hand-painted tiles and frescoes. The menu includes a variety of traditional Mexican dishes and 10 different soups, such as garlic, tortilla and nopales made from cactus native to Mexico, which is my favorite. If you can't decide what to order, try the "Cuatro Cositas," a combo plate with an enchilada, taquito, tamale and taco. If you dine here when "Chiles en Nogada" is a featured menu item, count yourself lucky. This rich dish is made with fruit and herb ground beef stuffed in a poblano chile. The green chile, white walnut sauce and red pomegranate seeds are the colors of the Mexican flag. What a patriotic dish!
