Sandy Creek Nature Center is at 205 Old Commerce Rd.; take the Athens Perimeter Loop to the US 441 exit (Commerce Rd.), then just n. This nature preserve has more than 4 miles of paved and dirt trails and a variety of themed nature walks and wildlife observation areas. The center itself has a very well put together collection of live animal displays (fish, reptiles) and interactive exhibits, including an exhibit for loggerhead sea turtles. An 1815 log house also is on the grounds. Educational programs, log house tours and planetarium sky shows are available by reservation.

Bicycles are permitted on paved surfaces only. The center is connected to the Oconee River Greenway.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
