Historic Oakland Cemetery is at 248 Oakland Ave. S.E. (MARTA: King Memorial station). Founded in 1850, this Victorian cemetery contains majestic oaks and some of the city's oldest magnolia trees. Gothic Revival and neoclassic tombs are found throughout the 48-acre cemetery as well as the graves of 27 former Atlanta mayors, six Georgia governors, “Gone With the Wind” author Margaret Mitchell, golfing great Bobby Jones and approximately 6,900 Confederate soldiers. Self-guiding walking-tour brochures are available at the visitor center and museum shop. Special events are held throughout the year.
