Factors Walk, a row of narrow buildings along the river bluff on the north side of Bay St., acquired its name in the 19th century when it was the meeting place for factors—sales agents and commission brokers such as cotton merchants—and was the center of commercial activities. Today it contains shops, restaurants and bars. A network of iron and concrete bridgeways connects the buildings to the bluff. The cobblestone streets were made from the ballast of ships from Europe.
