Sleeping Giant, 1 mi. n. of jct. SRs 56 and 580, is a mountain formation resembling a sleeping giant. Several legends and myths are connected to this site. One legend relates that the Menehune, trying to awaken the giant to help them repel an invading force, bounced huge rocks off his stomach. Although he did not awaken, the boulders ricocheting into the sea frightened off the invaders. Unfortunately, some rocks bounced into the mouth of the giant, who swallowed them and died.
