Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i is at 2454 S. Beretania St. The center's first-floor historical exhibit, Okage Sama De—I Am What I Am Because of You, depicts the history of the Japanese in Hawai‘i from 1868 to today. The exhibit focuses on such topics as the lives of immigrant plantation workers, the major plantation strike of 1909 and the Japanese involvement in Hawai‘i politics. Also featured are mock plantation-era buildings, three short films about the Japanese experience during World War II and the Ellison Onizuka Remembrance Collection, honoring Hawai`i's first astronaut.

The center also features the JCCH Honouliuli Education Center, which highlights Hawaii’s history of detainment during World War II, and a resource library housing books, oral history transcripts, photos, diaries and other materials.

Smoking, food and beverages are prohibited in the museum. Pets are permitted in the courtyard only.

Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
