University of Idaho is on the s.w. side of town, w. of US 95 via 6th St. Established in 1889, UI sprawls across 1,580 landscaped acres and has around 12,000 students. An 80-foot clock tower atop the Collegiate Gothic-style administration building overlooks a lawn containing the President's Grove and a Spanish-American War statue.

Shattuck Arboretum, on a hill between Rayburn Street and Nez Perce Drive, is a 14-acre tract of trees planted in 1910. Trails loop through groves of mature beech, incense-cedar, maple, hemlock and others. Among these specimens is a giant sequoia. The UI Arboretum and Botanical Garden is home to a larger collection of trees on the south side of campus.

Guided campus tours depart from the Office of Admissions and Campus Visits at 709 Deakin Ave.
