Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge

Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge covers 4,488 acres of Illinois River bottom land, including Lake Chautauqua; refuge headquarters is 7 mi. n. on Manito Rd., 1 mi. w. on CR 1950E, then .5 mi. s. following signs. Waterfowl numbers peak during spring and fall migrations. Shorebird concentrations occur in May and August. Bald eagles can be seen in fall and winter. Interpretive nature trails and an observation overlook afford views of the area.

Fishing is permitted, except during periods of low water and during the waterfowl hunting season, mid-October to early February, when certain areas are closed for sanctuary. Small mammals such as raccoons, foxes and beavers are common within the refuge. Waterfowl hunting is permitted in designated areas in season. Nut, berry and mushroom picking are allowed for personal use.
