McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum is in the s.w. tower of the Michigan Avenue Bridge at 376 N. Michigan Ave. The small museum on the Chicago Riverwalk offers five floors of exhibits describing the history of the Chicago River, its importance in the city's development and recent successes in improving water quality.

Opened to traffic in 1920, the bridge was designed in the Beaux-Arts style; its utilitarian rough brick interior sharply contrasts with the ornate sculptural reliefs outside dedicated to early pioneers. Visitors can see the bridge gear room, and during scheduled bridge lifts they can witness the finely balanced mechanism at work. Guided walking tours along the Chicago River also are offered.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
