Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is .75 mi. w. on US 50, then 2 mi. n. on SR 177/Flint Hills National Scenic Byway. This 10,894-acre site protects a remnant of the continent’s once vast tallgrass prairie. The visitor center offers exhibits, an orientation film and information. Self-guiding cellphone tours of the 1881 Spring Hill Ranch include the restored Second Empire ranch house, a massive three-story limestone barn and a one-room schoolhouse. Via bus, rangers conduct 90-minute prairie tours, which focus on natural history, the ranching legacy and ecology. A bison herd roams Windmill Pasture.

Nature trails are available, and living-history programs are offered during summer.

Note: Pets on leash are allowed in designated areas.

Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted.
