Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, 7 mi. e. on US 68, is America’s largest restored Shaker village. The village was founded in 1805 by the Shakers, members of a celibate, communal religious sect that began during the late 18th century in England. The village is an outdoor history museum preserving 34 original buildings on 3,000 acres with streams, forests and native prairies; more than one dozen buildings can be toured. All visitor services are provided in the original buildings. The structures, some dating to 1809, reflect Shaker standards of simplicity and utility. The stone Centre Family Dwelling has Shaker furniture and artifacts.

Costumed interpreters describe the society’s distinctive way of life, and artisans demonstrate such heritage crafts as broom making and woodworking. Activities throughout the property include hands-on changing history displays, 40 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, a farm experience with petting areas and chicken round-ups, organic gardens where visitors can sow seeds and wagon and hay rides. The paddle-wheel riverboat Dixie Belle offers 1-hour trips on the Kentucky River. In early August, the Shaker Village Craft Fair is held, and it features hand-made Shaker reproduction crafts.

Dixie Belle riverboat rides are subject to weather and river conditions.

Recreational activities are permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 4 hours minimum.
