Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. 5th St., between Muhammad Ali Blvd. and Liberty St., is one of America’s oldest cathedrals in continuous use. Built in 1852, the interior of the imposing red brick edifice features Gothic arches, ornate columns and a vaulted ceiling with more than 8,000 24-karat gold leaf stars on a blue field, as well as a fresco of cherubs surrounding the Virgin Mary.

The sanctuary is lined with oil paintings sent to Louisville in the mid-19th century by Pope Gregory XVI. Across the street from the cathedral is the Archdiocese of Louisville History Center.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
