McIlhenny Co. is off SR 329 on Avery Island. According to one tradition, company founder Edmund McIlhenny received a special variety of red capsicum pepper seeds from Central America as a gift from a friend shortly after the Civil War and developed the fiery Tabasco brand pepper sauce that is still produced on Avery Island by his descendants. Guests may view factory operations, multimedia displays and historical artifacts.
