Shadows-on-the-Teche is at 317 E. Main St. (SR 182). Built in 1834 by David Weeks, a prominent sugar planter, this white-pillared mansion remained in the family for four generations. A door in the art studio bears autographs of the guests of great-grandson William Weeks Hall, including those of D.W. Griffith, Cecil B. DeMille and Henry Miller. The gardens are filled with azaleas, camellias and huge, moss-draped live oaks.

Tours begin at the visitor center, which is located across the street at 320 E. Main St. The center also offers an introductory film and changing art exhibits.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
