Evangeline Oak Park, on Bayou Teche at jct. Evangeline Blvd. and New Market St., was established sometime between 1895 and 1902. The large oak tree was named for the heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's immensely popular 1847 epic poem, “Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie,” which was partially set in this part of Louisiana. This scenic site is said to be the most visited spot in St. Martinville since the late 19th century. The park offers benches and includes the Acadian Memorial, African American Museum and the Museum of the Acadian Memorial.
