Maryland Center for History and Culture is at 610 Park Ave. Founded in 1844, the society preserves and interprets Maryland's history with a museum of more than 350,000 pieces and a library of nearly 7 million items, including ephemera, genealogical material and photographs.

One of the museum exhibits, In Full Glory Reflected: Maryland during the War of 1812, showcases items from the early 19th-century war. A highlight is Francis Scott Key's manuscript of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” A visual arts exhibit includes portraits and landscape paintings by the Peale family of artists. Some of Henry Latrobe's paintings, sketches and letter books can be seen.

An extensive Civil War exhibit shows how Marylanders were affected by the conflict. Temporary exhibits also are offered.
