Long Hill Reservation, The Sedgwick Gardens is off SR 128N exit 18, then 1.5 mi. n. on SR 22 to 572 Essex St. This was the summer estate of Ellery Sedgwick, author and editor of the Atlantic Monthly 1909-38. He and his wife Mabel, an accomplished horticulturist, built the home in Beverly in 1925. It is modeled after a Charleston residence of the early 1800s.
The 114-acre site includes formal gardens boasting more than 1,000 native species of plants, many of them unusual, as well as a 1.2-mile woodland loop trail. Inside the house, the Sedgwick Gardens Library has an extensive collection of periodicals and books.
Lectures, workshops and tours are offered; phone ahead for schedule and fees.
