Charlestown Navy Yard is off I-93 exit 28 in Charlestown, with a visitor center in Building 5. Built in 1800 and today part of Boston National Historical Park, the yard served as a repair and supply depot for 174 years. Such innovations as ship houses and a ropewalk were among the yard's contributions. The USS Independence, a wooden-hulled, three-masted naval warship, was built and launched here in 1814.

The visitor center features the exhibit Serving the Navy Fleet and a 10-minute orientation film.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
