Massachusetts Institute of Technology is on the n. shore of the Charles River Basin, with its Welcome Center at 292 Main St. in Kendall Square. The institute was founded by William Barton Rogers as a school where students could learn “exactly and thoroughly the fundamental principles of positive science with application to the industrial arts.” It was chartered in 1861, but classes did not start until 1865 due to the Civil War. It moved to this site in 1916.

The institute comprises the schools of Architecture and Planning; Engineering; Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; and Science as well as the Sloan School of Management and the Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology. The institute's 168-acre campus extends more than a mile along the Charles River Basin.

Ninety-minute guided tours of the campus leave from the information center in the lobby of MIT's main building. A self-guiding mobile tour app for smartphones also is available.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
