Custom House is on the Derby St. waterfront at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Known by its granite steps and large carved eagle, the structure was built in 1819 and was used to conduct port business and collect tariffs. Nathaniel Hawthorne worked at this site for 3 years while acting as surveyor of the Port of Salem.
